About
I was born in Michigan. I moved to Togo, West Africa, when I was 12 and knew I’d found my home. I lived there for my teenage years and returned to the U.S. for university before returning to Africa to work with wild cats in 2002. I’ve lived full time in Southern and East Africa since 2004, studying leopards, lions, cheetahs, African golden cats, African palm civets, and other small carnivores.
A lot of my efforts, especially in Botswana, have been focused on finding solutions to conflict between large predators and humans. The more you work with wildlife, the more you realise that the poorest members of society - those with the fewest resources at their disposal and the most to lose - are usually ones who suffer from wildlife interactions. Finding solutions so that they can avoid losing crops and livestock is critical to conserving these species and to fostering a broader appreciation for Africa’s wildlife and wild places.
